Joseph Mara leaned back against the corner of the hearth, contemplating Malcolm’s reaction to the news with which Greyson had shattered his world. It was something Joseph couldn’t understand.

There was anger, yes. His son had been abducted.

There was also an understandable measure of fear. His face had gone white when Greyson informed them that Leila had gone after Michael.

But throughout an ordeal that would have sent an ordinary man into a fit of rage, spewing profanity and swearing vengeance, Mara had observed only a calm, steady determination.

This was not the Malcolm he remembered. This was not the son who had repeatedly shamed his father, running headlong through life as though it was something meant to be wasted. This man . . . was changed.

But Joseph knew from years of defending criminals that humans never changed. Reformed? Perhaps. For a while. But never truly changed.

Yet here Malcolm stood, speaking words that defied everything Joseph understood about human nature. Words of faith in a time that deserved only doubt.

“It’s all right, Greyson. It will be all right. I’ll get them both back, and we will all come home.” Malcolm’s voice was tight, but Joseph couldn’t miss the confident undertone.

This illogical approach—shared by both Thomas and his son—left Joseph confused. He knew that Malcolm had shifted from complete disbelief to a life of faith. But years of experience had taught Joseph that religion was often a matter of convenience instead of the heart. Still, the question that had lingered since the fateful night of Thomas’s arrest tormented him.

Can their Christ truly change men’s hearts?

Like Gideon of old, Joseph needed a clear answer. Only then would he have peace. His eyes flickered closed, and his lips moved in soundless prayer. If their faith was true, he needed a sign. “Make the impossible happen, HaShem, if they speak the truth. Bring the wife and child home. Then I will know . . . and I will believe.”

He exhaled slowly, opening his eyes to see Malcolm standing at the ceiling-high window .

“Thank you for the news, Greyson.” Malcolm lifted his chin, clasping his hands behind his back. They trembled slightly. “At least now I know how things stand.”

“Is . . . is there anything we can do, Your Lordship?” Greyson took a step back as though unsure himself if the man before him was indeed the boy they had once known.

Malcolm turned toward the two men, a strange light smoldering in his dark eyes. “Yes,” he said. “You can pray.”
